Note: When seeking mental health services it is always best to contact your insurance company. Most insurance cards have a telephone number on the card associated with mental or behavioral health. It is important to remember that many insurance companies 'carve out' or sub-contract mental health services to different insurance companies. So, for example, even though you have an Anthem Blue Cross insurance card, you still should contact them to inquire whether Dr. Smith is a contracted provider for the mental or behavioral health component of your plan. If I have one of these accepted insurance policies what should I do?
Look on the back of your insurance card and call them up. What you are trying to do at this point is (1) confirm that I am in their network AND (2) obtain information about what your co-payment will be for outpatient psychotherapy sessions. To be fully educated you should also ask the insurance representative to help you understand your deductible -- ask how the deductible works for the plan you have. It is important for you to understand the ins and outs of your plan regardless of the therapist you see!
Are there reasons not to use insurance even if I have it?
Yes. You may work in a field where the fact that you have utilized mental health resources might impact your advancement. Although this fact may technically be protected information, it is not always clear who has legal or illegal access to highly personal information. For example, in spite of federal laws, private medical information like your credit card shopping record is being bought and sold freely by companies who can profit from the information. Years of experience in life has taught that a little paranoia is sometimes helpful. Many patients prefer to pay on a fee-for-service basis.
